Karen Gusmer (’19), President of Beta Iota chapter at Wake Forest, represented the chapter very well at the national convention this spring at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. In addition to meeting both legendary professors, Groton and May, she served on the Resolutions Committee and participated in the declamation contest. Karen is pictured here onstage reading her paper, which was from Professor John Oksanish’s Vitruvius seminar. Karen won the award for the best paper! Macte virtutem!
Zoe Schneider (’21), majoring in Classical Studies, spent her spring semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. “Standing in the footprints of history is such a humbling experience,” says Zoe, who received the William Royall Scholarship from the Classical Languages Department to support her semester abroad. She is translating Ovid’s Ars Amatoria, making a mosaic in the method used by ancient mosaicists, will be writing a love guide in Latin in elegaic couplets, and so much more. “I really cannot speak more highly of this program. The level of academic excellence this program and its students bring has had such a positive impact on me as a student of classics, as well as on just me, Zoe.”
Kevin Woytowich (’21) received a bronze medal for his score on the CAMWS College Greek Exam and was the top scorer at WFU.
Karen Gusmer (’19), Katherine Phillips (’19), and Abby Moore (’20) were all inducted into Phi Beta Kappa April 2019. Professor John Oksanish was elected Chapter Secretary (our chapter is “Gamma of North Carolina”).
