Mary Pendergraft taught at Wake Forest University for more than 30 years and was the chair since 2015 until 2022. A life-long North Carolinian, she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. Professor Pendergraft’s contributions to the discipline have emphasized education in Latin (and Greek) at every level. She has more than twenty years of experience with the A. P. Latin reader, serving as Chief Reader, co-chair of the 2008 Faculty Colloquium, and a member of the Course Review Committee; she currently sits on the Latin Development Committee. In addition she chaired the SAT II Latin committee, and has been president of both the North Carolina Classical Association and the Southern Section of CAMWS. She has received awards for excellence in teaching and advising and for contributions to the discipline from several organizations. This summer her travel was all electronic, including to the virtual Institute of the American Classical League. In addition to Greek and Latin literature, her favorite topics include her coonhound Summer and two remarkable grandchildren. She’s very fond of her husband and three grown children, too.
