The Departments of Classics and Philosophy at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, are pleased to host the second North American Cicero Awayday on Saturday 12 April 2025. The first North American version was held at The University of Virginia in 2023.

The Awayday will offer an informal and friendly forum for presenting papers on any aspect of Cicero’s life, works, and reception. We aim to have papers covering a range of Ciceronian genres; works in progress and fully polished papers are both welcome. Papers addressing Cicero’s philosophical output are particularly encouraged.

Interested scholars (or qualified, advanced PhD students) are invited to submit paper proposals. Papers should be no longer than 30 minutes in length; shorter papers are also possible (but please indicate as much in your abstract). Send your title, abstract (of at most 300 words), name, and affiliation by November 1 2024 to both organizers, Emily Austin and John M. Oksanish, at austinea@wfu.edu and oksanijm@wfu.edu. General queries should be sent to the latter.

NB All presentations will take place in person, and an online version of the event is not planned at this time. That said, we hope to host a variety of Ciceronian scholars, even if they do not plan to present. (There will be opportunities for chairing panels, as well, though this is not required for attendance.) Breakfast and lunch will be provided on the day of the conference, and we hope to offer some financial assistance to those without access to travel funds (e.g., and in particular, contingent faculty).
